In an unfolding development that has stirred interest across genre and prestige-cinema circles, actress Danielle Deadwyler is reported to be in talks to star in Ryan Coogler’s upcoming reboot of The X-Files. While confirmation remains pending, the casting rumor reflects the shifting landscape of legacy franchise reimaginings and the growing recognition of Deadwyler’s rising presence in cinema and television. This article situates the speculation within her career trajectory, examines the challenges and opportunities inherent in rebooting The X-Files under Coogler’s creative direction, and offers a speculative framework for what such a project might look like.
Introduction: Rebooting a Cult Legacy
The original X-Files, created by Chris Carter, remains one of television’s most influential series, blending government conspiracy, paranormal mystery, and character-driven tension. Ryan Coogler, known for Black Panther and Creed, is reportedly developing a new version of the show.
The rumor that Danielle Deadwyler may headline this reboot has excited fans and critics alike. If true, her casting could mark a significant evolution of the series — bringing a fresh perspective, a modern tone, and a focus on underrepresented voices to a franchise once centered on Mulder and Scully.
Danielle Deadwyler: Career Overview & Breakthroughs
Early Career & Television Foundations
Born in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1982, Danielle Deadwyler began her career in independent film and regional theater before moving into television. Her early screen roles included appearances in A Cross to Bear (2012) and Being Mary Jane.
She gained wider recognition through recurring parts in The Haves and the Have Nots, P-Valley, and From Scratch, where she showcased her dramatic depth and range. Her turn as Miranda Carroll in HBO’s Station Eleven further cemented her reputation in prestige television circles.
Breakout Film Roles & Recognition
Deadwyler’s breakout came with Netflix’s The Harder They Fall (2021), where she portrayed the gun-slinging Cuffee. Critics praised her performance for its quiet intensity and physical presence.
Her portrayal of Mamie Till-Mobley in Till (2022) was a defining moment — a performance hailed as one of the most emotionally powerful of the decade. She received numerous accolades, including the Gotham Award for Outstanding Lead Performance and the National Board of Review’s Breakthrough Performance award.
In subsequent years, Deadwyler took on challenging and varied roles in I Saw the TV Glow, Parallel, and The Piano Lesson. She has also worked as a producer on several independent projects, signaling her growing influence in shaping the narratives she brings to life.
The Rumor: Deadwyler Joins The X-Files Reboot
Reports suggest that Deadwyler is in talks to play one of two lead investigators in Coogler’s new take on The X-Files. While the details remain under wraps, sources indicate that the reboot could reimagine the iconic investigator duo with a modern, socially conscious lens.
If the casting becomes official, Deadwyler would inherit a role steeped in legacy — a spiritual successor to Gillian Anderson’s Dana Scully or perhaps a fresh archetype entirely. Given her experience with intense, introspective roles, she could bring a deeply human dimension to a story world that thrives on ambiguity and moral tension.
What Her Casting Could Mean
A Rebalanced Duo Dynamic: The original Mulder-Scully relationship defined The X-Files. Deadwyler’s involvement suggests a reimagining — one that might invert or complicate the believer/skeptic dynamic.
Prestige Meets Genre: Deadwyler’s filmography bridges indie drama and high-concept storytelling. Her presence could elevate the reboot from nostalgic revival to something genuinely cinematic.
Themes of Identity and Truth: Coogler’s filmmaking often explores race, power, and history. With Deadwyler at the forefront, The X-Files could gain new resonance, using the paranormal as a lens for real-world inequities and unseen systems.
Emotional Gravitas: Deadwyler excels at portraying moral conviction and internal struggle — qualities that could make her a compelling anchor amid the show’s supernatural chaos.
Challenges Ahead
Rebooting a property as beloved as The X-Files is inherently risky. Fan expectations are high, and any deviation from the original tone could spark backlash. Moreover, Deadwyler’s potential casting invites comparison to Gillian Anderson’s Scully — one of television’s most iconic characters.
Still, both Deadwyler and Coogler are artists known for balancing depth with accessibility. If handled well, their collaboration could revitalize the franchise for a new generation.
Conclusion
While unconfirmed, the possibility of Danielle Deadwyler leading Ryan Coogler’s The X-Files reboot feels like a natural evolution of her career — and of the franchise itself. She brings prestige, intelligence, and emotional force to every role she inhabits.
If the truth is still out there, Deadwyler may soon be the one searching for it.
In a surprising and thrilling reveal for X-Files fans, series creator Chris Carter has announced that he’s been offered the opportunity to create a director’s cut of the 2008 film The X-Files: I Want to Believe. The announcement came during an episode of David Duchovny’s new podcast Fail Better, where Carter joined his longtime collaborator and friend for a candid conversation about the legacy of the show, creative compromises, and unfinished business.
“I just got the go ahead yesterday to do a director's cut of I Want to Believe, the second movie. And I can't tell you how excited I am about this.”
“I made it too scary and I was told so by the brass at Fox and they wanted a PG-13 movie. So we cut it back to be a PG-13 movie and we thought 'Okay, we've satisfied their demands.' The critics, the people who rate the movies, said 'No, it's not a PG-13 yet. You've got to cut it back even farther.' I can tell you that you can do more on network television,“Carter told Duchovny, speaking with rare frankness about the creative constraints he faced.
Released in 2008, I Want to Believe was the second feature-length installment of The X-Files, following 1998’s more blockbuster-oriented Fight the Future. Unlike its predecessor, the sequel adopted a darker, more introspective tone, returning to the series’ roots as a paranormal procedural with a human core. But many fans and critics noted the film felt subdued—some even disjointed—and now, Carter’s comments shed light on why.
Now, over 15 years later, Carter has been given the green light to revisit the project without the restrictions that once constrained him.
For longtime fans, this announcement is both unexpected and exciting. It’s a rare chance to see The X-Files through the lens of its creator—unedited, unfiltered, and finally unburdened by studio compromise.
Stay tuned: the truth, it seems, is still out there. And this time, it might be a little closer to what Chris Carter always wanted us to see.

Actor Robert Patrick recently took to social media to share some throwback photos from his time on The X-Files, and for longtime fans, it was a welcome trip down memory lane. The images, which included behind-the-scenes moments and promotional shots from Season 9, reminded many why his character, FBI Special Agent John Doggett, deserves another chance in the spotlight.
Robert Patrick’s Love for The X-Files Shines Through
Patrick’s Instagram post offered fans a rare glimpse into his experience on the iconic sci-fi series. The snapshots capture a time when appointment television was a necessity, and recording episodes on VHS was the only way to keep up. But what stands out most is Patrick’s own affection for the role, as he has openly stated that playing John Doggett remains his favorite career moment.
For those who first encountered him as the terrifying T-1000 in Terminator 2: Judgment Day, seeing him step into The X-Files as Mulder’s replacement was a revelation. His portrayal of Doggett brought a fresh dynamic to the series, cementing his place in sci-fi history. Yet, despite his impact, one major issue with The X-Files revival remains unresolved.
The Revival’s Biggest Oversight: No John Doggett
When David Duchovny famously departed The X-Files after Season 7 (initially partially and then fully from Season 9), Robert Patrick took on the daunting task of leading the show alongside Gillian Anderson. By Season 9, he was joined by Annabeth Gish as Monica Reyes, forming a new investigative duo. But when the series was revived in 2016, Doggett was nowhere to be found.
The absence wasn’t due to lack of interest—Patrick was simply unavailable because of his role on Scorpion. Series creator Chris Carter even wrote Doggett into a Season 11 episode but had to scrap the idea when scheduling conflicts arose. Ultimately, while Reyes made a brief return, Doggett remained sidelined.
A Revival That Could Have Been (And Still Should Be)
Looking back, The X-Files revival missed a crucial opportunity. Instead of solely focusing on Mulder and Scully, bringing Doggett back would have provided an intriguing continuation of the original series' final seasons. Now, with Ryan Coogler reportedly working on an X-Files reboot, the chance for Doggett’s return still exists.
Imagine a Halloween (2018)-style revival where Doggett and Reyes reunite to tackle unfinished business. It’s a compelling idea—one that would honor the legacy of The X-Files while embracing the next chapter. Given Robert Patrick’s clear appreciation for his time on the show, perhaps there’s still hope for a proper sendoff. After all, in the world of The X-Files, the truth is out there.

So I suppose we are talking about the episode Nothing Lasts Forever. It clearly had some gruesome images, but I don't even recall if I liked the episode or not. I would have to rewatch it once again.
